Latin Verb Tenses — All 6 Explained

The 6 Latin tenses in plain English — what each one means, when to use it, and how to recognize it. A homeschool parent's reference for Classical Conversations, Henle Latin, First Form, and any classical curriculum.

Why Latin Has 6 Tenses

English has three main tenses (past, present, future) but adds helper words like have, had, and will have to express finer distinctions. Latin handles the same work with six distinct sets of endings, each locked onto the verb itself. No helper words needed.

The 6 Latin tenses divide neatly into two groups of three:

Present System

Built on the present stem (from principal parts 1 and 2):

Present (ongoing now)
Imperfect (was happening)
Future (will happen)

Perfect System

Built on the perfect stem (from principal part 3):

Perfect (has happened)
Pluperfect (had happened)
Future Perfect (will have happened)

This is why memorizing all four principal parts of every verb is non-negotiable: parts 1-2 give you the present system, part 3 gives you the perfect system, and part 4 gives you the participle for the passive voice. Skip principal parts and you can only handle half the tenses.

The 6 Tenses, One by One

Present

praesēns

Happens now, right at this moment — or repeatedly / habitually.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amō—I love / I am loving / I do love
amat—he loves / she loves / it loves
amāmus—we love

When to use it

Actions happening right now, ongoing actions, or general truths (Caesar crosses the Rubicon; the sun rises in the east).

Memory Hook

One Latin present-tense verb translates three different ways in English (I love / I am loving / I do love). All three are correct — pick whichever reads best in context.

Imperfect

imperfectum

Was happening in the past — ongoing, repeated, or incomplete.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amābam—I was loving / I used to love
amābat—he was loving / he kept loving
amābāmus—we were loving

When to use it

Background action in the past, something that was in progress, or something repeated over time.

Memory Hook

The imperfect always has -bā- in its ending (first/second conjugation). Look for the -ba- and you can spot an imperfect at a glance. The word 'imperfect' means 'not finished' — the action is still going.

Future

futūrum

Will happen at some point after now.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amābō—I will love
amābit—he will love
amābimus—we will love

When to use it

Actions that have not happened yet. Also promises, predictions, and commands with a future flavor.

Memory Hook

In 1st and 2nd conjugation, the future has -bi- in its endings (amabit). In 3rd and 4th, it uses -ē- or -ēs- (reget = he will rule). Two different sets of endings — worth learning separately.

Perfect

perfectum

Has happened — completed action in the past.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amāvī—I have loved / I loved
amāvit—he loved / he has loved
amāvimus—we loved / we have loved

When to use it

A one-time action in the past that is now finished. Corresponds to both English simple past ('I saw') and present perfect ('I have seen').

Memory Hook

The perfect uses a completely different stem — built from the 3rd principal part (amō, amāre, amāvī, amātus → amāv-). This is why Latin students memorize four principal parts for every verb: the perfect stem is unpredictable. See /latin-conjugations-chart for the full paradigm.

Pluperfect

plūs quam perfectum

Had happened — completed before some other past action.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amāveram—I had loved
amāverat—he had loved
amāverāmus—we had loved

When to use it

When you need to express that something was already finished BEFORE another past event. 'I had already left when he arrived' — the pluperfect is 'had left.'

Memory Hook

Pluperfect = perfect stem + imperfect-like endings (-eram, -erās, -erat...). It literally means 'more than perfect' — one degree further back in time. If you see a perfect stem with -eram, think pluperfect.

Future Perfect

futūrum exāctum

Will have happened — completed before some other future moment.

Example forms (amāre, to love)

amāverō—I will have loved
amāverit—he will have loved
amāverimus—we will have loved

When to use it

Rare in everyday Latin but crucial for reading classical authors. 'By the time you arrive, I will have finished the book.'

Memory Hook

Future perfect = perfect stem + future-like endings (-erō, -eris, -erit...). In English it's 'will have verbed.' Caesar and Cicero use this tense to describe completed actions in the future context — worth learning even if it feels rare.

How to Actually Learn the Tenses

Master the present system first.Don't touch the perfect tenses until you can conjugate amō in the present, imperfect, and future without hesitating. The present system is where most students build their reflexes.
Learn principal parts as a unit. Every time you meet a new verb, memorize all four principal parts together: amō, amāre, amāvī, amātus. Never learn just the present. The perfect stem (part 3) is unpredictable and the only way to get it right is to have memorized it.
Drill endings by tense, not by verb. Once the pattern clicks for amāre, it works for every 1st-conjugation verb. Practice the endings in isolation (-ō, -s, -t, -mus, -tis, -nt) until you can rattle them off in any order.
